The only hotel with a Northern Light Alert
Do you wish to increase your chances of spotting the northern lights?Amazing Hotel at Spitsbergen, Svalbard - enjoy the Midnight Sun, the Northern Lights and dog sledding at Svalbard, Norway
Dogsledding, glaciers, boat cruise, polar bears, the Midnight Sun and the beautiful Northern Lights are highlights on your travel to Svalbard - and its good to know that proud trapping traditions are kept alive in the middle of Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard. Basecamp Trapper´s Hotel is a hotel apart, but top of the range for your vacation at Svalbard. With driftwood from the beaches, old woodwork from Barentsburg, and slate and sealskins as building materials, we have created a comfortable and pleasant arctic hotel for those wishing to have their holiday experience of their lifetime at Spitsbergen, Svalbard ..... and its good to know that we are counteracting your CO2 emissons travelling to the Arctic by planting trees in Kenya. "Change your travel habits, not the climate."
At Basecamp Trapper´s Hotel you can sleep well, enjoy excellent food and have quiet conversations under the glass ceiling in the Loft-Room with the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun glowing above you. Or you can plan tomorrow’s dog sledding expeditions and adventures together around the long-table in the Travellers Club.
In the arctic winter and spring you can travel with your own dogs or snow mobile through Svalbard’s spectacular winter scenery. The concept of Basecamp Spitsbergen is to a large extent built on the idea to give our guests the possibility to travel out of Longyearbyen to stay at comfortable, but exciting hotels in the wilderness. Basecamp are the only one at Svalbard giving you these possibilities. You can stay the night in our traditional hut by the Kennel in Bolterdalen or in our Basecamp Ship in the Ice in the Tempelfjord. The ship is frozen in the ice, just like the old arctic explorers used to do, from February to the middle of May. All of our wilderness hotels have safety, comfort and a pleasant atmosphere in common. Our skilled guides and robust mushing dogs will make the trip to a unique experience - all the necessary equipment and clothes will be made available by us.
In summer and autumn you can experience our newly renovated hotel at Basecamp Isfjord Radio. Given the exotic location, you will experience the tranquility and greatness of the Svalbard nature. If you are experienced in the use of weapons, you can set off on your own. But we highly recommend our guided tours and activities, including trips in zodiacs and a selection of guided walks on various topics. During the spring you can join trips with dog sleds on the glacier, hiking along the beach or to the mountaintops with a magnificent view over the spectacular landscape. Scout for polar-bears, seals and rare birds from the deck on roundtrips in the fjords; pass impressive glacial fronts, below bird cliffs, in the Russian settlements or by distant trapper or research stations. A visit to the museum, horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, or trips with pack dogs or horses. The possibilities are endless.
The Polar night is dark, mysterious and fascinating. Expeditions are arranged from the Trapper´s Lodge into the quiet and starlit night. We explore ice caverns with head lights, ride the dog sleds in the moonlight and go on polar night safaris on scooters. We seek shelter from the cold at the Trappers´s Station in Bolterdalen, and in the evenings we enjoy our fantastic hotel and the nice restaurants and pubs in Longyearbyen.
We welcome guests who dare to be impressed and moved, who are interested in learning new things, who are humble towards nature, environment, culture, people and animals. Guests who seek a touch of madness but still need exclusive and personal service and the best comfort you can get at Svalbard.

Moonlight dog-sledding under Arctic skies
On arrival at Basecamp Trappers Lodge in Longyearbyen, you will check into your private room, modelled on a traditional trapper’s cabin. With driftwood timber, Russian wetwood and hand-made furniture, the authentic atmosphere provides an opportunity to relieve stress, forget the modern world and concentrate on your emotions within.Winter nights - Basecamp Ship in the Ice
To top off your Svalbard stay we highly recommend visiting the one-and-only 'Basecamp Ship in the Ice'. Frozen in the Temple Fjord all winter, just like the expedition ships of Fritjof Nansen and other great explorers. To really get the feel of expedition life on board, and to enjoy the exquisite surroundings, with glaciers and sea ice, and perhaps the odd polar bear... - we suggest spending at least two nights on the grand "MS Noorderlicht".
Dog-sledding through high Arctic mountains
This is the expedition for the ones that seek challenges in close contact with ice, snow, dogs and arctic conditions. The expedition is organized with guests as active expedition participants; put up the tents, feed the dogs etc. The program should be regarded as an expedition and the ones that seek a high level of personal service are kindly asked to look to our other tour programs. When all this is said - and accepted, we do believe that this is the most ultimate tour program you will find in the Arctic! With your own dog team to our Ship in the Ice
Follow in the footsteps of Fritjof Nansen, and experience how it is to live on the ice. From the first of March until mid-May, the ship is frozen in the ice of the beautiful Tempel Fjord, just waiting for todays’ adventurers!
Seven-day wilderness husky expedition
"There is no choice, but onwards. The rule is as follows: Death or the west coast [...]" This quote is from the famous polar explorer Fridtjov Nansen (1861-1930), when he as a leader of a group of six was the first to cross Greenland in 1888. This trip is the closest expedition we have to that major feat, though we provide considerable more comfort and safety.
