Trekking

The adventure started at the Old Delhi Railway Station. I found my name on the sleeper and sat down by the window with my wide angle camera. It was just like having a front row seat at the theatre. India was unfolding right there in front of my eyes. Colorful national costumes, porters in red shirts with a mountain of suitcases on their head, different colors of the skin, languages, costumes, spicy food carried on large trays – and as if to underline that India is the world’s leading railway country the train moved precisely on time on its way to Basecamp Dharamsala.

Basecamp India

"If you wish to understand something about India you must empty your mind of all preconceived ideas and attitudes. Do not attempt any comparisons! India is different." Indira Gandhi

At dusk I find myself sitting on the roof of a 350 year-old fortress, watching the village below settle for the night. I feel like a king up here, a feeling strengthened by being in the company of Prince Praduman, my Basecamp host. He shares stories of his noble family, with roots going back to the 11th century, of wars and the legendary Maharajas, of India and of Hinduism. When he asks what I have enjoyed the most during my visit in Rajasthan, I do not mention the Taj Mahal, camel trekking in the desert, the train ride from New Delhi, the holy lake at Pushcar, the impenetrable palaces rising high above the sun-charred plains, or the Blue City of Jodhpur No, I tell him honestly that it is Chandelao – «his village». The hours I spent this morning just watching the women in their bright colorful saris fetching water at the nearby lake – that was pure magic! Far away from the tourist crowd, but I thought, close to the soul of India.

Discover the land of kings

Sand dunes, amazing lakes, palaces, and rugged forts, men and women in colourful turbans and skirts, bustling towns and quiet villages, camels, and tigers, harsh sunlight and the cool evening breeze are all there in abundance. The mood and the rhythm of the countryside changes from one region to another and from season to seasons.
Situated in northwest India, Rajasthan is divided into two parts by the ancient Aravali range. The varied topography includes both arid deserts and lush water-filled valleys. The wildlife too is diverse and rich in variety.

Spiritual tourism

“1959. I was only 7 years old but the memories are still clear. The crisp air, the stars in the night, the strenuous walk, I never thought I would make it: We were cold, sad and afraid - leaving everything we loved behind us in our homeland, Tibet. After 9 years of Chinese occupation His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama felt escape was the only possibility left in order to preserve the 1000-year-old Tibetan culture and their own lives. Now the Tibetan people in exile are settled in Dharamsala, in northern India. A new struggle has started to rebuild a home, keep our Buddhist belief and profound culture alive.” Chungdak Koren

Basecamp Rajasthan

Rajasthan means the Land of Kings it’s history is one of excess, bravery, contrasts and inequalities. Today, Rajasthan is peaceful and filled with romance from the bygone eras. The desert landscape starkly contrasts the colourful saris, turbans, the joy and hospitality. For many the most lasting experience is meeting the people, whether a weaver, a camel owner or a holy man.
