Seasons
The periods of polar-night and midnight-sun vary depending on latitude. Longyearbyen enjoys the midnight sun from April the 19th to August the 23rd while in the period of October the 28th to February the 14th, the sun never peaks over the horizon. The polar night, during which the sun stays more than 6 degrees below the horizon, lasts from 14 November to 29 January.
February to May: Mystical blue light in February ad early March. Midnight sun from April 19th. Cross country trips with dogsleds, by snowmobile or with skis. (Dog sled tours from November to June)
May and June: Backcountry mountain skiing and other expeditions. Millions of birds return to their breeding grounds.
July - October: Summer and autumn is the best time for boat trips and hiking in the valleys, over mountains and glaciers.
November – February: The dark period with fascinating Northern Lights. “Explorer” months. Active nightlife. Moonlight dog sledding.
